Third Axis Custom Engraving has been in existence since 2011

FARMINGTON — With a new location downtown, Third Axis Custom Engraving continues to preserve memories for customers through its laser engraving services.

Owner Bonnie Cummings started the business in November 2011 inside the Animas Valley Mall, but for the last six years, it has been operating inside her home.

Cummings said her reason for returning to a storefront location was due to increased business and the fact that she is in a better position financially. The store opened in its new location at 211 W. Main Street on June 5.

Cummings said she started her business to add a personal touch to items to capture and create lasting memories.

"I can help people with loved ones that passed on in creating a memorial for them," she said.

The store offers custom laser engraving on materials such as crystal, aluminum, leather, glass and wood.

It also offers personalized 2D and 3D crystal engraving and multi-material 2D engraving.

Cummings said the closest stores that offer 3D laser engraving on site are in Las Vegas, Nev.

Any item in the store, from aluminum license plates to cork tiles, can be engraved. Customers also are welcome to bring in their own items, but they would need to be examined to determine if they can be engraved, Cummings said.

The store continues to expand its services and has a new machine that allows engraving into metal, which can be used to personalize items such as guns and jewelry.

Jerilyn Hanhardt handles sales and marketing for the business.

"This business is very emotional. It's based on emotion. People don't walk in here and look at things because they just want to come in," Hanhardt said. "When they decide on something, it's based on something that they're feeling."

She said an example of that took place this week when a bride and groom decided to personalize items for their wedding, including wine glasses, flasks and identification tags.

"They loved it," she said.

Cummings and Hanhardt have known each other for years, and both had careers in health care before they began working together.

Cummings, who was a nurse for 18 years, said she was looking for a career change when she decided to start her business.

"This offers me an outlet to be very creative," she said.

As for Hanhardt, who was a billing specialist, working in a downtown business is a familiar feeling to her.

Her family owned Fashion Bell and Fashion Bell Jr. in the building now occupied by the Chile Pod and the Three Rivers Art Center in the 100 block of West Main Street.

"There's a resurgence that's going on downtown. There's an energy that's coming back," Hanhardt said.
